Upcountry Maui Hawaii USA. The official state flower of Hawaii is the yellow hibiscus (Hibiscus brackenridgei), also known as the pua aloalo. Hawaiians unofficially adopted the colorful hibiscus flowers as their territorial flower in the early 1920s. In 1988, the state selected it as the official state flower. The pua aloalo is known to have such healing properties as lowering high cholesterol, controlling blood pressure and strengthening the immune system, according to Alternative Health Journal.
